Living in a Van Down by the River
This has been my all-time favorite wilderness boondocking camp spot so far. We are literally living, if only for a night, in a van down by the river. Our OHS Guidance Counselor would be so proud, or vindicated, whatever. When we planned, dreamed and sought after van life, this was the exact picture we had in mind. We’ve been living in Our Ramblin Van for 8 months now, but this is the first night we made it to the river. It is everything we thought it would be.
We have come to the point in the journey where the premade plans have run to an end. We’re crossing the Canadian border tomorrow and have 5 nights reserved in Banf National Park, then we are freewheeling it until the next reserved park spot in August. This is more than a little unsettling for two people who are planners by nature. Literally living by the seat of our pants is like stepping off a rock into a pitch black unknown for us. One thing we do trust whole heartedly is that God leads us where we are supposed to be and that is a comfort like no other.
This will be our first visit to Canada, and we’ve been studying up on what we can bring and what we can not bring across the border. We’ve been using up all our fresh supplies of meat, dairy and produce to the point where the tiny fridge looks oddly empty. We even defrosted the teentsy freezer and it is strange to see actual shelf space in it. We re-homed our one house plant to a kindly laundramat owner who will take good care of it. We figured out how to convert the van’s displays to KPH from MPH. I think we’re as ready as we can be, well I can’t speak for Butch. I’m sure he will chime in here soon to update his fellow felines and fans of fugitive felines on his getaway to parts yet unknown.
We truly appreciate the technology that allows us to stay virtually tethered to our people. Without Starlink this would be very difficult. With Starlink and our different social media platforms, we feel like we’re dragging our friends and family along with us, like it or not, and that makes such a difference to us psychologically. Y’all know how vital it is to us that we can continue to ‘Hatch” you from afar. Yes, I can feel your eyes rolling back into your heads from here.
Stepping off the rock,
